The velvet-covered diary

I miss innovative UX designs

Some days I mindlessly scroll through my personal journal and find something that need not stay private for the joy of sharing. Today is one of those days.

2026-02-12 Exciting Human Interfaces.

I miss innovative UX designs.

I've been watching this talk: Are we stuck with the same Desktop UX forever? | Ubuntu Summit 25.10

I'm only half way through, and every slide was provocative. I was most intrigued by the demonstration of an alternative window management paradigm.

Apparently UX was historically called "Human Interface". I miss innovative interfaces. Different interfaces. Interfaces that is different to the norm. these days everything is standard and conformative. it makes the experience uniform, but boring. some apps (which I am failing to recall) are simply exciting. They are different, and they work just as well, they are natural in their own way.

One of the exhilarating moments of the talk as way the speaker showed a screenshot of the settings page of the latest iPad OS update, where the user is given three choices of window management. "you know they lost it when they let you pick the window manager".
